Founded in 1732, the Ephrata Cloister was first a refuge for a group of highly religious German immigrants looking for a place to live in worship of God. A series of buildings fulfilled all the needs of the Brothers, Sisters and families that were a part of the community, including dormitory-style lodgings, a worship house, bake houses, a physician's office, a stable and more. Guided tours are the best way to explore the cloisters, illuminating some of the interesting stories and histories of the buildings and their past inhabitants. The cloisters are set on the northern edge of the town of Ephrata, about 16 miles northeast of Lancaster.
